Is mother nature trying to tell us something? While actress Jamie Logan is a comic genius, this is no joke. The Lone Star Tick can cause.... wait for it... a meat allergy! That is correct and not fake news or an alternative fact. The bite of the lone star tick can cause the bitee (this word is now entering the lexicon) to develop an alpha-gal meat allergy, essentially making them allergic to meat. The allergy can manifest as anaphylaxis—a life-threatening allergic reaction characterized by constriction of airways. It can also cause the bitten individual to experience unpleasant side effect, like... wait for it.. explosive diarrhea! Oh dear. The alpha-gal is reportedly in the saliva of the lone star tick.
According to the CDC, "The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is found throughout the eastern, southeastern and south-central states. The distribution, range and abundance of the lone star tick have increased over the past 20-30 years, and lone star ticks have been recorded in large numbers as far north as Maine and as far west as central Texas and Oklahoma. All three life stages (larva, nymph, adult) of the lone star tick will feed on humans, and may be quite aggressive." Grrrr.
