Raven Deerbrook is the young woman whose daring undercover work achieved something never before seen. Knowing the Farmer John slaughterhouse was about to shut down, Raven - a member of Direct Action Everywhere - threw on a worker's outfit and infiltrated this controversial facility with a tiny pack of video cameras and transmitters. What she secretly videotaped has shocked the world.
It's made headlines in Wired magazine, which wrote an in-depth article on how she risked her own life to descend 26 feet to plant her equipment. This is the first time anyone has gotten hidden-camera footage inside a U.S. slaughterhouse carbon dioxide gas chamber. Raven captured what happens inside the box.
While the USDA is tasked with regulating how animals are treated at slaughterhouses, Raven says she saw no evidence of USDA cameras inside the actual gas chamber. But, That's exactly where SHE managed to get hidden footage so the world can now see and hear what really happens to these pigs -- who are usually babies about 6 months of age - when they are killed.
The video and sounds that emerged are so shocking and horrifying, a group of veterinarians have written an open letter denouncing the use of carbon dioxide gas chambers.
Raven says she started to suffocate herself just from the residual co2 and feared, for some tense moments, that her own life was in danger.
According to Wired, the gas chamber manufacturer calls co2 stunning a “stress-free” experience for animals On its website, Smithfield Foods claims that its co2 chambers lead to “painless loss of consciousness and death.” The company maintains it adheres to USDA regulations and that all of this is completely legal.
