Olympic cyclist Dotsie Bausch, head of Switch4Good, led more than two dozen protesters outside an LA Starbucks, demanding the company stop charging extra for plant-based milks. Starbucks claims "We believe it is our responsibility to build a more sustainable, equitable and resilient future for coffee, our communities and our planet." Nevertheless, this company charges U.S. customers extra for selecting plant-based milks, which have a much lower emissions footprint than dairy! Additionally, Starbucks claims, "Our work to advance inclusion, diversity and equity at Starbucks has already led to important policies, programs and initiatives." Nevertheless, Starbucks charges extra for plant-based milks, even though a huge percentage of the BIPOC community is lactose intolerant. In fact, according the National Institutes of Health, "On average, 65% of the world's population is lactose intolerant. The prevalence of lactose intolerance is variable among different ethnicities. It is most common in African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, and Asians and least prevalent in people of European descent." Here is the NIH citation. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK532285/ -- So, says Switch4Good, by charging EXTRA for non-dairy milks, Starbucks is penalizing people of color. Starbucks is invited on any time to respond. Or, the company can simply end the up-charge for plant-based milks!
