Texas vegans are now fighting back against those using the word "vegan" like a dirty word in Texas politics. We are seeing this political weaponization play out in real time in Texas and aimed at US Senate candidate James Talarico.
Republicans have launched aggressive attacks against him, falsely labeling him a vegan. The backlash intensified after a resurfaced clip from 2022 showed Talarico telling an animal welfare group that his previous House reelection campaign had officially become a "non-meat campaign" that purchased vegan products, stating that reducing meat consumption was an "existential" necessity to fight climate change.
Even though Talarico clarifies that he is not actually vegan, the mere accusation is being used by his opponents as political ammunition to alienate voters, proving how deeply entrenched the anti-vegan stigma remains in mainstream politics.
To unpack this uproar and challenge the narrative that Texas can’t embrace plant-based compassion, UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell sits down with Renee King-Sonnen.
Renee is a former Texas cattle rancher who famously underwent a massive change of heart, converting her husband Tommy's traditional cattle ranch into a thriving vegan farmed animal sanctuary. Today, both Renee and her husband are proud, dedicated vegans. Renee has a powerful new book out called Rowdy Girl: Confessions of a Vegan Cattle Rancher from Bloomsbury, detailing their incredible journey. You can order the book here! Let's hear what she has to say about the Talarico uproar making headlines.
