A new international food pyramid is making headlines, and its recommendations look very different from the new U.S. dietary guidelines.
Developed by 23 nutrition scientists, the International Food Guide Pyramid draws on dietary guidelines from seven countries and regions and more than 250 scientific publications. The goal is to provide a simple, science-based approach to healthier eating.
The new pyramid puts plant-based foods front and center, emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds. It recommends choosing plant proteins more often, using healthier plant oils, and limiting red and processed meats.
Meanwhile, the U.S. food pyramid released by the Trump administration places greater emphasis on meat and full-fat dairy. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has filed a lawsuit seeking to have those guidelines withdrawn, alleging concerns about the scientific review process and food industry influence.
