What happens when a longtime vegetarian is asked to reconsider dairy?
In this candid campus conversation, an Allied Scholars for Animal Protection (ASAP) advocate meets a UC Berkeley graduate student who has avoided meat for years but still consumes dairy and eggs. Their discussion moves from his love of cheese and his Indian vegetarian background to the realities facing cows, calves and chickens used for food.
The conversation challenges the idea that vegetarianism necessarily avoids animal harm and asks a larger question: if we already believe something is wrong, why postpone changing it?
As the student considers what he has heard, the discussion turns toward practical alternatives, campus advocacy and the influence students can have on the people and institutions around them. What begins as a casual conversation becomes an example of ASAP’s approach to direct student outreach—and how a respectful but frank exchange can prompt someone to reconsider long-held habits.
