A religious ritual on the streets of New York is bloody and controversial. More than a hundred rabbis have publicly urged coins be used instead of live chickens in a rite designed to atone for sin. Rabbi Jonathan D. Klein is co-founder/director of Faith Action for Animals and has led protests against the ritual in Los Angeles. Rabbi Klein wrote an article in the Jewish Journal, entitled Compassionate Kapparot: Use Coins, Not Chickens. The Rabbi notes that "Joseph Caro, author of the Shulchan Aruch, as well as Nachmanides, opposed this ritual, which infringes on the laws of tza’ar ba’alei chayim (animal cruelty), bal tashchit (wanton waste) and the creation of n’veilah (carcasses unfit for consumption)." The Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos founding member Rina Deych told The Jerusalem Post. "I'm Jewish, and I come from 18 generations of rabbis. I'm not personally religious anymore, but I grew up ultra-Orthodox. Nobody in my family uses chickens for Kapparot. Some never even did it at all."
