Sangita Iyer is one of the world's leading champions for India's elephants and she made this film after she witnessed, with her own eyes, the terrible ways elephants are abused for cultural and religious regions in the Indian state of Kerala, which is on India's tropical Malabar Coast and is famous for its elephants. Sangita Iyer was born in Kerala so she felt a special need and responsibility to document and show the truth, in the hopes for forcing change. This award-winning documentary reveals the problem, which can lead us to a solution. In the words of the film's producer, "Gods in Shackles offers hope to the thousands of endangered captive and wild elephants in India through heightened awareness that will inspire key stakeholders and policy makers to enhance the living conditions of these highly social animals."
Sangita Iyer's nonprofit organization, Voices for Asian Elephants, is implementing many programs in India to improve the lives of elephants. From robotic elephants that are designed to replace the living temple elephants to high-tech systems that are preventing trains in India from hitting elephants, from the rehabilitation of captive elephants who've been rescued from the horrors of temple celebrations and tourism to creating barricades that prevent elephants from falling into open wells, Sangita Iyer's organization is on the front lines, fighting every which way to protect India's heritage animal, the majestic elephant. But, she cannot do it along. If this film inspires you to want to help, please get involved with Voices for Asian Elephants. Gods In Shackles is also the title of a book by Sangita Iyer, available on Amazon.
