Wayne Hsiung Talks to Animal Rising
1h 17m
Wayne Hsiung is one of the most dynamic and courageous leaders in the animal rights movement. He has repeatedly risked long prison terms in order to rescue suffering animals trapped inside factory farms. He's been put on trial repeatedly, sometimes acquitted, sometimes convicted. Sometimes the charges are abruptly dropped, leaving him to demand that he be put on trial and have his day in court in order to show the world what's really happening to animals trapped in modern-day, industrialized animal production.
Hsiung is a co-founder of The Simple Heart Initiative and previously co-founded and led Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), a Berkeley, California based animal rights group that advocates for and carries out open rescues of animals. Hsiung is trained as an attorney, but had his California law license suspended in 2024 due to his felony trespass conviction in Sonoma County, California after a trial involving the open rescue of sick, suffering and dying chickens from a factory farm. He is working to get his law license back.
Previously, Hsiung was a visiting assistant professor at Northwestern University School of Law, and a National Science Foundation-funded graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You can get Wayne Hsiung's blog here: https://blog.simpleheart.org
