Toxic Neighbors

This explosive film shows how passionate activists are fighting the spread of massive animal factories across Central Europe and beyond. And, it exposes how governments are helping the corporations over the interests of the people who are suffering from living near these factory farms. The film asks the question: What happens when the industry threatening your health, your home, and your community is protected by the very laws meant to safeguard you?
Toxic Neighbors, a powerful Polish documentary presented by Green REV Institute, investigates the devastating consequences of industrial animal agriculture and the political systems that allow factory farming to expand at the expense of rural communities, animals, and the environment.
In a major international initiative, UnchainedTV is undertaking the simultaneous translation of Toxic Neighbors into nine languages, bringing this urgent documentary to audiences across linguistic borders and helping communities around the world recognize the shared consequences of industrial animal agriculture.
At the heart of the film is a controversial Polish legislative proposal, commonly referred to by its critics as the "stench law." Presented as a measure to protect agricultural production, the proposal raises serious questions about property rights, environmental accountability, and whether residents could lose meaningful legal protections against industrial farming operations.
Through interviews with residents, researchers, medical professionals, and animal protection advocates, the documentary examines the consequences of an agricultural system increasingly dominated by massive livestock operations. Communities describe concerns about pollution, unpleasant odors, diminished quality of life, and the difficulty of challenging powerful commercial interests.
But Toxic Neighbors reaches beyond one country's legislative debate.
The film explores the connections between factory farming, public health, climate change, animal suffering, and corporate influence. It challenges the familiar assumption that consumers alone can solve the problems of industrial agriculture through individual purchasing decisions, arguing instead that meaningful reform requires government accountability, public participation, and systemic change.
As advocates organize, scrutinize legislation, and encourage citizens to participate in public consultations, the documentary offers a message of solidarity and possibility. Its central question is not simply whether industrial agriculture can change, but whether society is willing to demand that change.
Produced by Sylwia Spurek and Anna Spurek, and directed, filmed, and edited by Tomasz Kiełbasa, Toxic Neighbors is both an investigation into Poland's agricultural system and a warning that extends far beyond its borders.
