Rowdy Girl The Movie Is a Hot Docs Hit!

Rowdy Girl is a spectacular film that made a huge splash at the 2023 Hot Docs Film Festival, North America's largest documentary film fest. This brilliant film is alternately hilarious and poignant. It stars Renee King-Sonnen and her husband Tommy. After hanging out with the cows in her husband's herd, Renee has a spiritual experience and realizes that she can communicate with the cows and understand their inner lives. Propelled to save them from slaughter, this former country singer manages to turn her husband's Texas cattle ranch into a vegan farmed animal sanctuary. Along the way, she also turns her husband vegan. This fabulous film looks at Renee's relationship with the cows and with her husband and - in doing so - helps us understand why "farmed" animals - cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats - are entitled to live out their lives in dignity and not as commodities. Renee also begins converting other animal farms and the people who run them. The unique way Renee's story is told avoids tired documentary techniques and tropes, leaving us with a unique story, compellingly told. This video is a look at how the film was received at the 2023 Hot Docs festival in Toronto and includes interviews with Renee, Tommy and director Jason Goldman. Videotaped and edited by Ray Kowalchuk.
