Pigs Headed to Death in Crash!
40m
UnchainedTV was live outside Toronto, Canada at the scene of a major crash involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial livestock truck transporting hundreds of pigs to slaughter. It happened right outside the slaughterhouse.
As the crash investigation got underway, the situation on the ground quickly became incredibly tense. The accident effectively trapped the frightened and thirsty pigs inside the sweltering metal transport trailer for hours as police and firefighters processed the scene. Animal advocates on the scene reported an alarming level of increased suffering, noting that the pigs were tightly confined in the heat while emergency crews worked to secure the roadway. The activists begged authorities to be allowed to give the animals water but were turned down.
The global Animal Save Movement was founded in Toronto and holds regular vigils at this pig slaughterhouse.
It was at this very same location that famed animal activist Regan Russell was run down and killed by a slaughter truck.
Joining us live from the scene this morning was a panel of prominent voices from the animal rights movement who monitored the situation in real time:
-Jenny McQueen, internationally recognized animal rights activist.
-Benjamin Pitkänen, prominent Finnish activist and co-founder of the organization Viral Vegans.
-Mark Powell, an advocate whose presence there carried profound weight. Mark is the partner of the late Regan Russell—the dedicated activist who tragically lost her life at that exact location while protesting and bearing witness to livestock trucks, becoming a powerful symbol and martyr for the global animal rights movement.
We spoke with them about what they witnessed on the ground and the struggle to provide basic comfort, like water, to the animals trapped inside.
Before we dive into that footage, we want to extend a formal invitation to representatives from the slaughterhouse to come on and offer their comment and respond to the situation that unfolded.
