Tracey and Bill Soucy, a husband and wife team, founded Loving Farm Animal Sanctuary in Paso Robles, California, where they've been for almost 7 years. Home to 50 animals from 9 species, it's an idyllic oasis where each individual is treated with respect and dignity. Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats, and other beings, roam the 16 acres and greet sanctuary visitors, but only if they feel like it. Most of these animals have been rescued from the horrors of factory farming and get to live out their lives in peace, safety and enjoying the company of their fellow residents. "Once you meet them, it's hard to eat them," says Bill Soucy. He and his wife have created this sanctuary in the midst of what is both wine country and a region of intensive animal agriculture. Few people realize, for example, that California is America's largest dairy state with millions of exploited cows. "Our mission is to open people's hearts and minds to extend compassion to ALL species," says Tracey Soucy. She and her husband are both vegan. Their passion is to set an example of how animals should be treated and to educate the public by showing visitors how social, intelligent, complex and loving farmed animals are. They're just like your dogs and cats.
