A Vote to End Monkey Lab Torture!
27m
This vote to move away from vivisection is a seismic shift that has sent shockwaves through the global scientific community and signaled a definitive turning point in the fight for animal rights. The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Board of Directors has passed a unanimous resolution to authorize negotiations with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to end experiments on monkeys and transition the federally funded Oregon National Primate Research Center into a primate sanctuary! This monumental decision marks the beginning of the end for the Oregon National Primate Research Center—the largest of the several remaining federally funded primate facilities in the United States—as it prepares to negotiate a transition into sanctuary for the nearly 5,000 monkeys currently held behind its walls. According to PETA, the vote ends monkey breeding immediately although the experiments currently underway will not automatically cease.
For decades, this facility has been synonymous with controversy, characterized by what activists describe as a "house of horrors" where monkeys were subjected to excruciating tests involving alcohol addiction, nicotine infusion, and the traumatic separation of infants from their mothers. But today, the silence has been broken. Following a relentless, multi-year onslaught of undercover investigations, legislative pressure, and public outcry led by PETA and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the university has finally bowed to the inevitable: the future of science is human-based, not animal-bred.
Joining UnchainedTV for an exclusive, high-stakes breaking news interview is the woman who has spent twenty years leading this charge from the front lines. PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo, a legendary crusader in the movement to empty cages, sits down with Jane Velez-Mitchell to discuss how this "glorious day for science" was won—and why this victory is the first domino to fall in a nationwide revolution that will change the face of medicine forever and end animal torture in labs forever!
