Maverick Mustangs of the Salt River reveals the urgent battle to defend Arizona’s last remaining wild horse populations. This film uncovers the tragic policies driving their removal and the passionate advocates fighting to protect them. Craig C. Downer of The Wild Horse Conspiracy and Tom Porter of Animal Consciousness take us through the Tonto National Forest and surrounding river basins to showcase the wild mustangs’ ecological value and evolutionary heritage.
Wild mustangs face a coordinated push toward elimination, despite being native returnees that enrich desert biodiversity. Through responsible grazing, seed dispersal, and natural fire suppression, these horses play a vital role in ecosystem balance. Downer shares how public pressure halted one such removal—and why continued vigilance is essential. Scientific field assessments and ecological monitoring highlight the horses' positive impact on biodiversity and soil health.
This compelling video reframes the mustangs not as invasive nuisances, but as ancient beings whose survival is deeply intertwined with ours. It’s a call to conscience, backed by science, urging the public to stand up and protect these sentient, intelligent animals from erasure.
