VICTORY FOR THE HORSES! In a historic win for animal rights, the New York City Council has overwhelmingly passed legislation to ban horse-drawn carriages, with the phaseout scheduled for June 2028! The landmark vote follows decades of animal rights protests, the deaths of numerous carriage horses and the tragic death of an 18-year-old tourist in a Central Park carriage accident. Known as Romanch's Law, the legislation marks a turning point in the battle over NYC's controversial horse carriage industry. Animal advocates celebrated the vote as a long-awaited victory for the approximately 180 carriage horses working on New York City's streets.
UnchainedTV was LIVE in New York City at a packed outdoor news conference just hours before the historic vote, where animal rights activists demanded justice for the horses. UnchainedTV reporter Rachel Ejsmont brought viewers live coverage from the scene, while longtime carriage horse advocate Jodie Wiederkehr provided powerful insights and commentary on the decades-long campaign to end this controversial industry. Edita Birnkrant, executive director of NYCLASS, was among the leading advocates fighting for change. Hosted by Lindsey Baker, this special UnchainedTV report explores the battle to end horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park, the efforts of The Partnership to Ban Horse Carriages Worldwide, and the growing movement to protect horses from exploitation. While legal challenges may lie ahead, animal advocates are celebrating a historic milestone in the fight for animal rights and compassion.
