James Cromwell's roles have often been associated with high moral standing, whether he is playing the incorruptible brother of media tycoon Logan Roy in the hit series Succession or playing the kindly farmer in Babe, Cromwell has seemingly always tried to inject some social justice into his acting roles. His latest role offers a triple shot of social justice as the Oscar-nominated actor and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals scold Starbucks in a hilarious and pointed new short film directed by Nim Shapira and produced by Noa Osheroff. Starbucks has been under growing pressure to stop charging extra for plant-based milks like oat and soy milk. Given animal agriculture's massive role in climate change and given the vast number of people who are lactose intolerant, critics are calling BS on Starbucks' claims to be a progressive and “environmentally conscientious” corporation. PETA says Starbucks has "admitting that dairy is the biggest contributor to its carbon footprint" while nevertheless charging extra for the more sustainable alternatives. PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman adds, “Milking customers up to 90 cents more for eco and animal-friendly vegan milks is indefensible, cruel, and environmentally harmful." Ironically, Starbucks is well aware of how to make this switch, because they are already doing it in other countries. Notes PETA, "Starbucks in Germany, the U.K., Poland, the Czech Republic and the majority of the company’s stores in France have already dropped the vegan milk surcharge, and its stores in China, India, and elsewhere offer at least one vegan milk option at no additional cost." Why are they refusing in the US? Hmmmm. Meanwhile, many other chains—including Wawa, Panera Bread, Pret A Manger, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Noah’s New York Bagels, and Philz Coffee—already offer dairy-free milk at no extra charge. We invite Starbucks or its new CEO on any time to respond to the criticisms of PETA, James Cromwell and, by extension, millions of vegans who feel they are being punished for making the best choice for the planet we all share. Paul McCartney has also joined PETA's campaign, telling Starbucks, “I sincerely hope that for the future of the planet and animal welfare you are able to implement this policy.” To learn more visit: PETA.org.
