Jewelry magnate Taimoor Choudhry’s transformation from a fast-living, wild spending, conspicuous consumer of luxury goods to a relentless anti-fur activist starts when he asks a simple question: Who am I wearing? It turns out his fur trim is from a dog. Being a dog lover, this upends his world and propels him on a journey that finds him going undercover, and even wearing a wire, to a fur market.
Ending Real Fur is a fast-paced, award-winning film that also features fashion legend Tim Gunn, of Making the Cut and Project Runway fame, who joins forces with Choudhry along with Arch Enemy lead singer Alissa White-Gluz. This movie also includes many of the world's leading anti-fur activists including: PETA's Ingrid Newkirk, Last Chance for Animals' Chris DeRose, The Fur-Bearers' Lesley Fox, former mink farm worker Dan Starr, Animal Justice's Camille Labchuk, Canadian Member of Parliament Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, undercover investigator Malcolm Klimowicz and many more.
This movie is brimming with optimism. Its goal is to ban fur farming in Canada and, during the course of this film, a bill is introduced to do just that. If this film campaign is successful, that bill could become law in Canada, which could cause the entire fur industry to collapse. So, watch and get involved.
With many European nations having already banned fur farming, with most top designers and brands having sworn off fur, this issue has hit a tipping point. Amongst fashionistas, fur is considered passé and, in the words of W Magazine, "fabric non grata." Nevertheless, it’s estimated that, globally, 100 million animals are still dying for fur yearly. This is what Tim Gunn, as a fashion icon, is determined to stop once and for all.
With so many fur-free fabric options on the market, Gunn encourages fashion designers and consumers to go faux or go home! “Anyone who wants a fur-like garment can go to faux sources,” explains Gunn. “You’ve got to ask the potent moral and ethical questions on this topic, what’s the right thing to do? I really believe it is an entirely unnecessary waste of lives.”
The film also includes interviews with leaders of Canada's indigenous community who object to the fur industry using them as a cover and an excuse for continuing the fur farming industry. Their input and viewpoint is absolutely crucial if there is any hope for passage of a bill to end fur farming in Canada. The lives of millions of animals depend on this campaign to #MakeFurFarmsHistory.
